The power of speech is truly unique and this ability is characteristic only of humans and no other beings on earth. Thus to elaborate more on this particularized ability, it is pertinent to take a look at how we, as human beings evolved to be intelligent speakers of the language and how language itself evolved over the years starting from the most primitive forms of a language that our immediate ancestors possessed.

The Human Ancestral Lineage and Man was a direct descendant of Apes

The human language story starts in Africa, and millions of years ago Australopithecus, the early first ancestors of man came to life. These early forms of human beings were small in size and more specifically, similar to monkeys but bipedal and were equipped with simple tools necessary to sustain their existence. They were the first steps that signaled the transition from the primitive-like ape stage to the human form. Then comes by gradual modification of the physical and mental endowment of the first human species in response to new conditions and pressures and the appearance of new and more effective tools and/or if not always new reorganization of society in some way. The early Miocene saw the advent of Homo habilis, also known as the ‘handyman’ signifying the distinguishing feature of early humans through tools and utensils.

The new species Homo erectus which appeared about 2 million years ago was considered to be a giant step in the evolution of human beings. Due to the increase in the size of the brain and better-balanced locomotion, Homo erectus decided to expand beyond the area of Africa to Asia and Europe regions. They established new cognitive capacities which enabled the growth and evolution of the first human languages. The necessity of communication in the process of hunting, gathering food, and interpersonal cooperation encourages the development of future advanced forms of language.

The Emergence of Language

Thus, by 200000 years back homo sapiens emerged to the scene of our direct ancestors. They were even bigger and much more intelligent and their brains had increased in size and were set for the creation of today’s human beings. Language in the modern sense of the term obtained its fundamentals within these early human groups. What is still being discussed among scientists as to the reason and the manner and even the period in which language first started emerging in human societies, it is beyond doubt that language facility availed a major advantage to the evolutionary process.

When early peoples migrated to different parts of the globe they began to develop different languages based on new and different circumstances of existence. It also suggests that such linguistic diversity is inherent to the nature of our species since people need to constantly adapt and get creative in the ways they communicate with other people. Narasimhan, Amrit / The Creaking of the Human Larynx: Vocalization Types & Their Evolutionary History The present article looks at the history of humans and the development of languages and notes that all types of languages have a history to unfold.

Language as a Means to Meeting Basic Human Needs and Experiencing Social Dynamics

Thus, as communication language allowed early humans to organize group activities such as hunting or food search, it also helped them share knowledge and pass innovations to descendants. Age-old cave paintings found in places like Lascaux, France are examples that show that early peoples already had abstract significances in their usage of symbols or pictures. These historical creations provide portholes in the wider picture of human communication and imaginative expression.

The Evolutionary Continuum: Originally it was Apes and then to Modern Humans

All in all, the discussion of the emergence of human speech indicates that humans’ African origins and close relationship to apes and our ability to adapt and invent. Homo habilis, Homo erectus, Neanderthals, and all other species leading to the development of Homo sapiens have had their role in shaping language as an important function of man. In analyzing what is known about the origins of language and what is currently observed in the multitude of languages existing today, we understand the intricate interaction between what is innate in the human condition and what is learned as a result of cultural and environmental factors existing today.

Learning which path led from an ape to a modern human makes one value the languages and cultures that exist today even more and acknowledge that people all over the world are related regardless of time and space. In this vein, as our species pushes forward in its exploration of the still hidden aspects of human language, we pay homage to those first societies who worked so hard and so skillfully to bequeath to their descendants the building blocks of societal organization, creative expression, and achieving that mysterious ‘something more’ that has come to define the human species.
