As a car owner, there are things that everyone needs to know. so that we can know that it is time for the car to be serviced. One very important sign is exhaust smoke from a car especially if the car shows signs of having a problematic internal combustion engine. Let’s see various sorts of car exhaust smoke, the reasons, and the implications.

Understanding Car Exhaust Smoke

Car exhaust smoke also referred to as engine smoke is evidence of emissions from automobiles. It can be in several shades which specify the nature of the problem. If you know what the smoke is, you can immediately respond to the situation.

Car exhaust smoke can be classified into four types depending on the kind of emission it is producing, these are;

White Exhaust Smoke: White smoke which is produced by engines is normally caused by either coolant leaks or water entering the engine. This could be the result of a bad cylinder head, a bad engine block, a problem with the head gasket, or the thermostat may not able to work well.

Black Exhaust Smoke: Black color smoke from the vehicle’s exhaust means that the mixture is fuel-rich or the vehicle’s air filters are blocked. They are a dirty air filter, a bad fuel injector, ignition system issues, or a lean fuel mixture.

Blue Exhaust Smoke: Blue smoke is symptomatic of either oil being burnt by the engine or piston rings whereby the rings have worn out. This may be affects to other factors such as worn-out piston rings, oil leakages, faulty valve stem seals, or even low levels of engine oil.

Brown or Grey Exhaust Smoke: Brown or grey coloration of the smoke may indicate that fuel and oil have been burned. This may be a result of a bad fuel injector, contaminated fuel filter, leakage of engine oil, or fouled piston rings.

Some Causes of Car Exhaust Smoke

Car exhaust smoke can be caused by various factors, including:

Engine Oil Leaks: Blue smoke is caused by burning oil, which can be due to old piston rings faulty valve stem seals, or engine oil leaks.

Coolant Leaks: The coolant leaks can cause the white smoke which is an indication of the cracked cylinder head or damaged engine block.

Fuel Leaks: Black smoke which is common with most vehicles is usually a result of fuel leakage, and this can cause fuel injector complications or air filter pollution.

Ignition System Problems: Blower assembly faults may cause black smoke: the spark plug and ignition coil may be bad.

Conclusion

The car exhaust smoke that comes out from the car exhaust is informative of the car’s internal health. When a person comprehends the cause of various types of smoke and why they occur, one can well deal with engine issues.
